How to configure Avast Internet Security to work with Internet Download Manager (IDM)

When I try to download any file with IDM, it just tries to connect to the Internet and cannot start downloading, or shows some error message "Cannot start a download in IDM. An error occurs on download start" lest show you how to configure Avast Internet Security to work with Internet Download Manager (IDM).

Reason. IDM is not allowed to download or run in Firewall settings. Many FireWalls check the size of application executable file that try to access the Internet. That's because a virus can replace the file with its own, and get access to the Internet. Probably when you updated IDM, its executable file size changed, and your FireWall blocked the Internet access for IDM. If you have a FireWall installed, please check that IDM has appropriate access rights.

Solution. Change incorrect Firewall settings. Please choose instructions for your Internet Security (Firewall) software below:

How to configure Avast Internet Security to work with Internet Download Manager (IDM)

1. Please exit IDM by using "Tasks > Exit" menu item. See picture below.

2. Run Avast Internet Security.

3. Press on "Firewall" button in the left toolbar, and select "Application Rules" in drop-down list below on the left. Find "Tonec Inc." in right window and click on it.

4. In drop-down list, find "Internet Download Manager (IDM)", and right click on it. Select "Delete" menu item in right click menu to delete incorrect rule.

5. Then run IDM, and start downloading. If a window with "Firewall Question" title appears, and it asks about "IDMan.exe" program, press on "Allow" button.

After these steps, IDM will be able to download files.

If, after updating IDM, it stops downloading, you will need to repeat the steps above from the beginning.

If the instructions above do not help, please try to completely uninstall your FireWall TEMPORARILY. Disabling the firewall is not enough, because FireWall keeps blocking access even if you switch it off. After uninstalling and rebooting, check if your problem persists. If it is resolved, then the problem is definitely caused by your FireWall software. You should try to contact its developers, and ask them for a solution, or try another FireWall.
